Perspective Block Letters

Skyscapes in 1 point perspective and some interesting "houses"!!

Oh, the weather outside is frightful....let it snow let it snow let it snow!!!

Wow!! I cannot believe it is mid-December already!!! We have a pile of snow almost 2 feet high outside my back door. Time is just flying by. We said farewell to the extraordinary Ms. Emily last week. Send her good vibes as she completes her final projects and tests this week at GVSU.  She will start her elementary placement in January. It feels a little quiet around here, we all miss her smiling face and wacky Wednesday outfits!

The ART 1 kids just finished 3 lessons on drawing in 1 point and 2 point perspective.  This means making a flat- 2 D piece of paper look as if it is 3D, definitely not flat! They can now all create the feeling of space and depth in their drawings. They have made gorgeous block letters, an unusual city scape and created imaginary homes; tree houses, contemporary architecture, castles, log cabins and even a Walmart using 1 point and 2 point perspective!!!  NOW we are glazing the awesome pottery we created a few weeks back. Sometimes art lessons take a long time to complete. First we plan, then we sketch, then we learn the new skill, then we make something using our new skills and in the case of our pottery we had to HURRY so the clay would not become too dry and then WAIT for it to dry and get fired in our kilns. Nobody told these kids they would be learning patience in the ART room!! Patience and perseverance and  time management!  At last we are to the final decorating stage, lots of creative glazing happening this week!  Don’t peek, these may be coming home as a present!!!

The ART 2 Ladies ( I know, never had a class of ALL girls!!) are finishing up their clay unit. They have so far had a go on the potter’s wheel!! Can you spell SUCCESS??!??! They have created a functional piece of pottery that has an animal influence. Currently they are finishing up a Cake made of clay in the style of a favored artist. We have some very interesting shaped cakes in process! Have you ever seen ACE of CAKES on the Food Network?? Crazy Cakes!! Stay tuned! Oh yes their portraits turned out beautifully! They are hanging in the hall. Watch for some art work to find its way home soon!

Advanced Art is working hard…or hardly working!! When you love making art like these kids do, an hour is never long enough and it hardly feels like work!! We just mailed of a group of hand-made holiday cards to an art group that delivers the cards to people that are in the hospital over the holidays!!  Hope we brighten their day! As the semester comes to a close, we only have 4 more weeks! Art Element power points are getting a lot of attention as are our set of 25 ATC’s. Artist Trading Cards. These little gems are tiny original artworks that are never sold only traded! We are planning a little trade with NRMS right before break! Adv. ART will also be glazing/firing their potter’s wheel creations! All were successful this go round, some very much so!!!  And we will be finishing up our Japanese TORO  (lanterns) next week! WE are also squeezing in a lesson or two on portraiture. Many of these kids did not have ART 2 so we are slipping this in too! Keep eating your Wheaties kids! We are on the home stretch!

Enjoy this busy time of year, take care of yourself and those you love!

Hello all ART lovers!

Our year has gotten off to a spectacular start here in room 133!  The ART 1 kids have been working hard learning to use x-acto knives! Rest assured we are safe and there has been NO blood! They are currently experimenting with reflections, line of symmetry and complimentary colors. It almost sounds like MATHJ Today we started creating a cube from a flat piece of paper…I know… that is why we call it the “challenge box”! ART 2 has done some watercolor painting to help spruce up our school as well as painting some lovely food paintings.  Advanced  ART started out the at warp speed; so far they have sewn their own sketchbooks, drawn a self-portrait using a yard stick, newspaper and Sharpie!!! They have designed a ceramic tile that they are in the process of glazing and OH YES, learned all the Elements of ART and the importance of “putting a matt on that”!!!! be sure to ask????

Assignments were given the first week of school for the “ART in the NEWS” and” Gallery Visit”.  These are to be done as homework ..specifics can be found on Family Access as well as with your child!!!  https://rpsfamily.rockfordschools.org/

Next week starts ARTPrize so.. I hope you all take advantage of the wonderful experiences to be had by taking a trip to downtown GR in the next couple of weeks to enjoy all the art so close to home!

**NOTE: ARTPrize certainly counts as a Gallery Visit and there will be many articles online and in the paper about ARTPrize in the next few weeks.

Time seems to be accelerating here in the art room so until next week or possibly the next..Happy Friday!

Yesterday while painting, Mrs. Appleby decided to dip her brush in her
